IDENTIFICATION OF THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT

In order to define the subject of the survey, that is the forms of transport and the infrastructures to record, we started from the website of the Lombardy Region – Direzione Generale Trasporti
www.trasporti.regione.lombardia.it

Forms of transport examined:

  • EXTRAURBAN TRANSPORT
  • URBAN AND INTERURBAN TRANSPORT
  • LAKE NAVIGATION
  • RAILWAY SERVICE

Infrastructures considered:

  • RAILWAY STATIONS
  • AIRPORTS

What follows is an analysis of the above mentioned transports.

EXTRAURBAN TRANSPORT

We have considered the connections between different towns in the Lombardy Region.

URBAN AND INTERURBAN TRANSPORT

We have considered transport services inside each capital of a province and we’ve limited our survey only to each capital of a province for practical reasons: the extension of the region does not allow to analyse all urban services of the Lombardy Region.

We have considered the following forms of transport:

  • bus
  • tram
  • trolleybus
  • underground
  • cableway

For interurban transport we have considered means and services from the capital of the province to the suburbs. Such services are provided mostly with buses but, in Milan, also with trams and trolley bus.
Cableways are included in the urban public transport because cableways identified connect two places  in the same town.
Towns having cableways as public transport are Bergamo and Como.

LAKE NAVIGATION
We have considered the lines used only for public transport and not those used for tourist transport. The first one is a public utility transport sometimes essential for certain connections.
The second one is a merely recreational type of navigation and it was not analyzed. For example, as the lake of Mantova and the lake of Varese only have tourist navigation services, they were not considered.

RAILWAY SERVICE
The survey only considers railway lines and trains circulating in the Lombardy Region.

RAILWAY STATIONS
The railway stations have been considered as infrastructures of the railway system.
Considering the high number of railway stations in Lombardy, we decided to examine the accessibility only of those in each capital of a province.
The survey concerned a potential path made by a disabled person from the car park of the station to the railway platform.

AIRPORTS

As far as air transport is concerned, we haven’t considered air companies and carriers but airports, that is the infrastructure on the territory of the Lombardy Region.
We have analysed the accessibility of the following airports: Milano Linate, Milano Malpensa Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, Orio al Serio (BG) and Montichiari (BS).
